Ever since Apple rushed onto the scene with its bright colors, catchy music, and slim iPod, MP3 players have been all the rage. From awkward teenagers to executive businessmen, MP3 players can be seen on nearly everyone wishing to drown out the world around them with the sounds of their favorites songs.
Some are unaware there are numerous MP3 players to choose from - not only the illustrious Apple brand. The important thing to consider when purchasing an MP3 player is how much music needs to be stored, and the cost.
The type of MP3 player to choose should depend on how much space is needed on the hard drive. MP3 players are not just for music anymore. They can virtually hold one's whole life: songs, photos, address book, calendar, etc. MP3 players are measured by gigabytes, or GB. The higher the GB, the higher the content the device has the capacity to hold. MP3 players can be as small as 1GB or as large as 80GB.
Out of all MP3 players sold, three out of four are iPods. This does not suggest by any means that Apple's product will be the best option for everyone. Because of its pomp and the fact the company launched iTunes with their product, they have been the most successful. On the other hand, their products are also among the most expensive in the line of MP3 players. Their iPods range from $79-$349, depending on the model (1GB-80GB). These models vary according to their features, including video, photo, size and interface.
Other well-known electronic companies have produced quality MP3 players for a lesser cost. Sony has manufactured the Walkman, a radio featuring MP3 player that ranges from $120-$210. Sony's pros include the horizontal or vertical viewing screen, condensed design and simple navigation. Another dependable company is iRiver, whose products cost between $65-$370. It has a great sound, sleek exterior, and FM feature as well.
Alternative brands to Apple also include Creative Labs and Sandisk. Creative Labs' products are priced between $35-$400, with features similar to other brands. Sandisk's Sansa, $25-$250, is a great Flash MP3 player that allows subscribers to Yahoo! Music Unlimited to download the songs directly to the device wirelessly. All of these MP3 players are compatible with certain music services: iTunes with iPod, Yahoo! with Sandisk, and Microsoft's music software usually works with the others. They are not typically compatible with more than their exclusive software.
There is an MP3 player world beyond Apple's rose tinted glasses. Apple's iPod may be the best option for some, but for those who wish to expand beyond iTunes and iGadgets there are alternatives. The best names in MP3 players include Creative Labs, Sandisk, iRiver and even Sony. There are more than just these brands, of course; research should be done before deciding on any one exclusively.
